The Tennessee Coalition for Open Government recently re-elected to its Board of Directors the following members: Frank Gibson, public policy director of the Tennessee Press Association; Maria De Varenne, editor and director of news for The Tennessean; Louis Graham, editor of the Memphis Commercial-Appeal; Jack McElroy, editor of the Knoxville News Sentinel; and John Stern, citizen representative.

The board also elected Charles Overby as a new board member. Overby is the former chairman of the Freedom Forum, Newseum and Diversity Institute. For 22 years he was chief executive officer of the Freedom Forum, a non-partisan foundation that educates people about the press and the First Amendment. Also newly elected to the board is Shanda Sundstrom, news director for WBBJ in Jackson.

TCOG also elected the following officers to its executive committee: president, Doug Pierce, attorney with King & Ballow and representative for the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters; vice president, Lucian Pera, attorney with Adams and Reese LLP; secretary, Dorothy Bowles, University of Tennessee professor emerita and representative for the Society of Professional Journalists East Tennessee Chapter; and treasurer, Marian Ott, state treasurer for the League of Women Voters.

Board directors serve staggered three-year terms. TCOG has 22 board directors.

The Tennessee Coalition for Open Government is a nonprofit founded in 2003 as an alliance of media, citizens and good government groups that provide research, education and tracking of open government issues in the state.
